The new white grape in town

Put down that glass of tired old Chardonnay and get on board with the next big white grape. Hailing from the Rias Baixas appellation in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, AlbariZo – with its signature minerality and complexity – is unlike any other white you’ve likely had before. AlbariZo vines are traditionally low yielding, while the grapes are thick-skinned and don’t produce a lot of juice. The wine is in high demand throughout Spain and has become the new darling of winebars here in the States.. Personally, I love this grape and can’t get enough of it.

Though traditionally only produced in Spain and Portugal – where it’s called Alvarinho – this varietal is beginning to see some success in California. Longoria and Tangent are making especially good versions, and I think that more and more California vintners will soon wake up to the charm of this varietal.
