New Year's Resolution

By the time New Years comes, we’ve all got sins to atone for, and bad habits we’ve been indulging in, hence our yearly and oft-broken New Years resolutions. As the calendar resets, and we all feel a sensation of renewal, wanting a fresh start, its tempting to take December 31st as the day to make positive changes in our lives. And while there is nothing wrong with making a commitment to a better diet, more exercise, or better fiscal discipline, why not also make a resolution to enjoy yourself more by sharing more wine with your friends?
Whether you’re a serious collector who hoards red Burgundy like a squirrel with a cheek full of nuts for winter, or a casual drinker with a few bottles in your closet, there’s no reason to not open more wine this year. Great bottles are meant to be enjoyed, regardless of how tempting it may be to put them on a pedestal and covet rather than consume.
Of course for those of us who invest in wines for the purpose of turning a profit, there’s no reason to reach financial ruin by opening a cult California Cabernet years before it’s ready and has reached its maximum potential and value. It you invest your income in wine, by all means, treat it as such. But for casual drinkers like me, who happen to love wine enough to buy wines in advance or in bulk, make a resolution this year to start pulling more corks!
More than anything else, what I get from my favorite wines is pleasure through sharing them with loved ones. As much as sipping a great glass of wine by myself at the end of a long day is a pleasure I will never let go of, the best times to enjoy the wines I hold on to for a rainy day are those moments when my home is filled with people I know will enjoy them as much as I do!
